The project to make Nueva Colonia’s sewer system in Turbo a reality has been approved: more than 12,000 people will see an improvement in their quality of life

5 March 2025
  • The sewer system is the backbone of the Juntos por Urabá project, announced at the end of 2024, which is driving the comprehensive transformation of Nueva Colonia in the Urabá region of Antioquia.
  • The total investment in the sewer system exceeds COP 110 billion, making it the largest and most significant project ever developed in Colombia through the Obras por Impuestos mechanism. It also stands out for the number of contributing companies involved.
  • The project includes the construction of sewer networks, a lift station, and a pressure pipeline, creating a comprehensive system that will enable the proper management of wastewater and contribute to reducing multidimensional poverty in the Nueva Colonia community.
  • This initiative brings together a strong coalition of public and private partners, including: Grupo Argos, the National Government, EPM, Banafrut, Uniban, Greenland, Puerto Antioquia, Aguas Regionales, the Turbo Mayor’s Office, ProAntioquia, the Government of Antioquia, BioPlanta, Fundación Grupo Social, Smartfit, Micro Inversiones, Clínica Panamericana, Sura, and Bancolombia.

Three months after the launch of the Juntos por Urabá program, led by Grupo Argos, the National Government, and a group of partners—whose purpose is to comprehensively improve the quality of life for more than 12,000 residents of the Nueva Colonia district in Urabá, Antioquia—the first milestone toward making the long-awaited sewage system for this community a reality has been achieved: the Obras por Impuestos project has been approved. This approval will allow a group of 10 taxpayers to allocate part of their income tax directly to investments in the territory for the development of this major infrastructure project.

The project involves an investment of COP 110 billion, making it the largest in terms of budget and scale in the history of the Obras por Impuestos mechanism in Colombia. It also stands out for the number of contributors involved, who have committed to fostering equitable development in this key region of the Antioquia department through the Juntos por Urabá program.

The project will soon begin the engagement and contracting processes and could commence construction in the second half of this year. The realization of the Nueva Colonia sewage system represents a crucial step in driving the sustainable development of Urabá through structural solutions that enhance the quality of life for its residents.
