Grupo Argos launched the Juntos por Urabá project, a comprehensive intervention to improve the quality of life for 12,000 residents of the township of Nueva Colonia in Turbo, Antioquia. This project, undertaken in partnership with the Colombian National Government, led by the Administrative Department of the Presidency (DAPRE), along with Grupo Prisa and W Radio, commemorates the company’s 90 years of history and reaffirms its commitment to the sustainable development of the country. Through this initiative, Grupo Argos contributes to the well-being of a region that, while one of the most promising in terms of industrial and logistical development, also faces significant social challenges.
This initiative brings together more than 15 public and private organizations, as well as national and regional government entities. The project is currently advancing works in:
- Access to Safe Water and Basic Sanitation: The backbone of Juntos por Urabá is the construction of a sewage and basic sanitation system that will directly impact public health in this community and help reduce the multidimensional poverty gap in the area. This project alone represents an investment of COP 65 billion, funded through the Obras por Impuestos mechanism. Additionally, the project includes providing safe drinking water solutions for over 1,300 families in Nueva Colonia, aligning with Grupo Argos Foundation’s commitment to water security for rural communities in Colombia, where nearly 60% of residents lack access to this vital resource. This initiative receives funding from Empresas Públicas de Medellín, Banafrut, Unibán, Greenland Investments, Puerto Antioquia, Bancolombia, ProAntioquia, Aguas Regionales, the Turbo Municipality, Inversora Fundación Grupo Social, and Bio Planta.
- Housing Improvements: Through the Hogares Saludables program, 1,000 homes will be upgraded, an initiative by Cementos Argos and Grupo Argos Foundation aimed at improving the quality of life for families in vulnerable communities. The program focuses on enhancing living spaces, such as floors, bathrooms, kitchens, and dining areas, to address Colombia’s qualitative housing deficit and directly impact family health and well-being. Since 2021, Hogares Saludables has benefited over 6,700 families with an investment of COP 15 billion. This project is supported by FundaUnibán, Puerto Antioquia, and Berta Martínez.
- Educational and Community Infrastructure: The plan includes building a high school for the Institución Educativa 29 de Noviembre, in collaboration with Banafrut and other partners, benefiting 500 students. Additionally, in August, Fundación Grupo Argos will begin constructing Parque Alegría – Construmundo, a park for the entire municipality, resulting from an alliance with Corporación Rosalba Zapata, FundaUnibán, Puerto Antioquia, and Comfama.
“Juntos por Urabá is proof that collaboration between the State and the private sector is the path we must follow in Colombia to build collective prosperity. At a crucial moment for this region, accompanying the start of operations at Puerto Antioquia with a joint effort will create virtuous and harmonious development in Nueva Colonia.”
Jorge Mario Velásquez, President of Grupo Argos
Juntos por Urabá includes a combination of resources from Grupo Empresarial Argos and private partners, along with contributions through the Obras por Impuestos mechanism, which allocates corporate income tax payments directly to projects in areas most affected by the conflict.
“This project is a proclamation of dignity for a region to which the country has a historical debt that, now in 2024 and with this Government, we are committed to settling through tangible actions that go beyond mere words.”
Laura Sarabia, Director of the Administrative Department of the Presidency of the Republic of Colombia
