Grupo Argos Foundation commemorates the Inter-American Water Day by protecting more than 25 watersheds in Colombia and investing COP 6.9 billion

4 October 2024
  • One of the main focus areas of Grupo Argos Foundation is water protection, aiming to contribute to water security for rural communities across the country.
  • To date, the Foundation has eight environmental conservation programs, half of which are dedicated to protecting water resources in Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, and Tolima.
  • Inter-American Water Day highlights the importance of this resource for people’s lives and its role as a tool to promote sustainable development and climate action.

In line with its commitment to harmonize the relationship between humans and nature, Grupo Argos Foundation has allocated more than COP 6.9 billion in 2024 to continue contributing to the water security of territories across the country. This effort is carried out through four programs exclusively dedicated to developing initiatives and projects in collaboration with local communities to protect three watersheds: Río Claro and Río Cartama in Antioquia, and Río Saldaña in Tolima.

As a result of these efforts, the Foundation has protected more than 15,300 hectares of forest, signed over 391 conservation agreements, and safeguarded 25 water tributaries.

“In our mission to protect water, it is essential to continue consolidating coordinated projects between communities, the private sector, and the public sector that are effectively executed through resources and investment, but also remain sustainable over time.”

To achieve this goal, Grupo Argos Foundation has developed a watershed management model that includes activities such as the conservation of forest fragments, restoration for ecological connectivity, sustainable production processes, and the implementation of participatory science as an useful alternative for communities to learn about and take ownership of their territory. This has been achieved through participatory monitoring processes, which have recorded more than 23,009 instances of wildlife through camera traps.

Out of the 14 programs led by Grupo Argos Foundation, 8 are dedicated to environmental restoration and biodiversity protection.
