  • This book features photographs and excerpts from chronicles written by Sigifredo Eusse Marino, a writer and journalist from Barranquilla, portraying the relationship between the mangrove ecosystem and the history of Barranquilla’s development and growth.
  • This publication includes a dedicated chapter on the identification of bird species inhabiting Ciénaga de Mallorquín, which is home to 193 bird species. This represents 9.8% of the national avian diversity and 21% of the bird diversity in the Caribbean region.
  • The creation of this book was a collaborative effort led by the Sustainability team of Grupo Argos’ Urban Development Business and the team of researchers and biologists from the Autonomous Corporation of Atlántico (CRA). The process took more than a year to provide the community with a comprehensive guide to understanding this vital ecosystem.
  • The book’s production was spearheaded by Grupo Argos’ Urban Development Business as a valuable contribution to the conservation of Ciénaga de Mallorquín, in partnership with the Autonomous Corporation of Atlántico.

As part of the “Somos Sostenibilidad” (We Are Sustainability) event led by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Atlántico, Grupo Argos launched the book “Memorias del Manglar”. This publication brings together photographs, historical research, interviews, and a bird guide to provide insight into the biodiversity found in Ciénaga de Mallorquín and the vital role the mangrove ecosystem plays in the growth and development of Barranquilla.

“Mangroves are valuable ecosystems that, in addition to having a positive impact on the quality of life in coastal cities, host a significant percentage of marine biodiversity and serve as a natural barrier against the effects of climate change in the country. That is why we are proud to present two major projects that contribute to the conservation of this ecosystem.”

For the creation of this book, the Sustainability team of Grupo Argos’ Urban Development Business worked for a year in close collaboration with the residents of the La Playa district community and the technical and expert personnel of the Autonomous Corporation of Atlántico. The goal was to develop an educational tool focused on the ecosystem services provided by the mangrove ecosystem in Ciénaga de Mallorquín. The book highlights more than 193 bird species, representing 9.8% of Colombia’s national avian biodiversity and 21% of the biodiversity of the Caribbean region.

Aligned with Grupo Argos’ commitment to conserving this ecosystem, the event also featured the launch of a community-based monitoring and early warning system to protect and preserve Ciénaga de Mallorquín. This system allows for the systematic measurement of critical environmental parameters, including salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, suspended sediment concentration, and total coliforms (bacteria), with the aim of improving the swamp’s environmental quality.
